System Overview¶
SmartBeam uses laser beams across the sheet to measure rock speeds and split times. A phone or tablet running the SmartBeam app connects to multiple units over Bluetooth, controls the timing setup, and displays the results.
What makes up the system¶
- Sensors: each SmartBeam sensor sends a laser beam across the ice and detects when a rock interrupts it.
- Retroreflectors: a reflector sits opposite each sensor and returns the light toward it, completing the beam across the sheet. It attaches to the sensor as a cover for storage and transport; separate them for use.
- The app: your phone or tablet connects to the sensors wirelessly. You assign their locations on the sheet diagram and choose the throwing direction so the app knows which beams the rock will reach, and in what order.
How a throw is measured¶
Place sensor-and-reflector pairs across the lines you want to measure, such as the back, tee, or hog lines. You can also place a beam beyond the hog line to measure post-release speed.
Arm the system, then deliver the rock through the beams. Each beam measures speed at its location; beams placed on sheet lines work together to capture split times. Results appear in the app as the rock travels, while the sensors' lights show readiness and timing progress.
Follow Connecting and Setting up Beams to prepare the system, then Arming and Timing to time a throw. Read Laser Safety before switching on the sensors.
